How do you care for a fig tree?

I am a terrible gardener and I just got a fig tree. Any tips on keeping it alive?

  Pretty basic, water it every week, and change the soil every once in a few months.

  I think I figured out how to hook up my hose, so that's a good start! I don't know how to adjust the nozzle though. Any thoughts?
